Family and Forgiveness by Papa Francisco

Papa Francisco

Given that this is a site dedicated to family, since The Conjunction of the Realms is written mainly for families, I considered this text appropriate because it holds within it an answer for all families of the earth. I’m not a Catholic but certain principles transcend walls and are universal. When I found the text, it was written in Portuguese, and probably originally spoken in Italian by our beloved Papa Francisco. I took the liberty to translate it into English:
“There is no perfect family. Our parents are not perfect, we are not perfect, we do not marry the perfect person and we do not have perfect children. We complain one about the other. We disappoint one another. And that’s why there is no healthy marriage and no healthy family without the exercise of forgiveness.
Forgiveness is vital for our emotional health and for our spiritual survival. Without forgiveness the family becomes an arena of conflicts and a stronghold of hurts.
Without forgiveness the family falls ill. Forgiveness is the sterilization of the soul, the deep cleaning of the mind and the liberation of the heart. He who does not forgive does not have peace in his soul and no communion with God. Grievance is a poison that intoxicates and kills. Holding a grievance in the heart is a self-destructive act. It is autophagy. He who does not forgive becomes sick physically, emotionally and spiritually.
That’s why the family must be a place of life and not of death; a territory of healing and not of sickness; the stage for forgiveness and not for guilt. Forgiveness brings joy where hurt had produced sadness; healing, where hurt had caused sickness.”
Papa Francisco (Pope Francis)
